043. (Mar 10) THE HEART IS DECEITFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS (2005, Asia Argento) 40
Asia Argento showed promise with Scarlet Diva (which I didn't
like much) and she shows even more promise here, handling many nearly unfilmable
scenes with the right combination of style and energy. I haven't
read the novel but from all indications here it probably could not have been
made into a film that would've interested me -- life is not all agony after
all.
044. (Mar 10) JARHEAD (2005, Sam Mendes)* 62
A war film by people with no war experience about people with no war
experience; they all watch Apocalypse Now, Platoon and Full
Metal Jacket and then they dream.
045. (Mar 11) A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (2005, David Cronenberg)* 86
Second Viewing, up from 80, probably liked
it more because it was divorced from my expectations of what Cronenberg is interested
in portraying and I no longer have to confront the wild audience reaction to
any given scene (sometimes laughter and disgust simultaneously). Performances
are very complex, adapting and changing as the film changes who they need to
pretend they are (or who they are) and how they respond to the changes that
these new emotions are having on them. Cronenberg is strongest when he keeps
one foot in reality, although this film is less naturalistic than some people
are giving it credit for (everything is idealized and normal, while stressing
the normalcy).
046. (Mar 11) THE HILLS HAVE EYES (2006, Alexandre Aja) 63
Finally a 70's horror retread that actually improves upon the (admittedly
mediocre) original film. Aja showed in Haute Tension that he was capable
of shamelessly and unironically wringing suspense out of most routine horror
situations and he employs a similar strategy here; getting the characters established
early so that when the horror starts there is very little reason for it to slow.
047. (Mar 13) DUCK SEASON (2004, Fernando Eimbcke) 65
Jim Jarmusch directs a script by John Hughes with varying results; sometimes
very funny but also drifts towards indie cliches whenever it tries to reach
past the established slightness of the narrative. Promising but inessential.
048. (Mar 15) THE ICE HARVEST (2005, Harold Ramis)* 61
I think these characters were originally meant to be older;
with their crimes meant to finance their retirement away from the meaningless
existence they have found for themselves. Regardless, Nobody's Fool did a lot
of similar things better but this still has a worn out noir charm to it.
049. (Mar 16) 10TH DISTRICT COURT: MOMENTS OF TRIAL (2004, Raymond Depardon)*
67
Here is a link
to Theo's write up. I even (unintentionally) gave this film the same grade,
although I didn't realize that until just now. Depardon doesn't trust the documentary
form.
050. (Mar 16) DOGVILLE CONFESSIONS (2003, Sami Saif)* 54
At least the second documentary to show Lars Von Trier as a game playing
monster, albeit a monster with a vision and the ability to always challenge
himself on new projects. The Five Obstructions and Dogville Confessions
show someone who might require you to disfigure yourself if he felt it would
result in something greater than flesh. He is a control freak but his vision
is undeniable.

Two of the best French actors (Huppert and Greggory) somehow get lost in a chamber drama that should have been a wonderful showcase for their performances. Instead Patrice Chéreau derails the film completely with his flamboyant direction and operatic tendencies; turning this into Scenes from a Marriage as directed by Baz Luhrmann’s evil and cruel twin brother.
148. (Aug 09) TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY (2006, Adam McKay) 46
There are a few laughs to be had here; especially whenever Sacha Baron Cohen’s Jean Girard character is onscreen, which bodes well for his upcoming Borat feature. However, far too much of this film revolves around sub-"Saturday Night Live" sketch material (“Shake and Bake” seems like something the SNL writers would try to turn into a cultural phenomenon) and it never commits to just broad comedy rather than character based comedy and tries to switch back and forth between the two. 110 minutes is excessive for this material and the second half has some deadly stretches without laughs. More time working on the script might have helped eliminate some of the fat (most of the stuff with Ricky Bobby’s family and his pit crew) and not left the talented cast members stranded during so many scenes.
